The Arachnology Nomenclature Committee was requested by the President of CIDA, Dr Rudy Jocque, to enquire whether it would be feasible to produce a standardised list of arachnid ordinal names to be adopted by CIDA.
After some deliberation, the Committee has agreed that this is an entirely feasible proposition which would promote much-needed stability, especially with regard to computerised data-base searches and for use in undergraduate text-books.
The Committee unanimously agreed that the system proposed by T. Savory (On the names of the orders of Arachnida, Systematic Zoology 21 : 122-125, 1972) would be the most appropriate and would conform most closely to the principle of "current usage".
Therefore, the Committee recommends that CIDA calls upon it's members to vote in favour of adopting a standardised list of arachnid ordinal names, and that CIDA actively promote the use of these names.
